About Derik

My name is Derik Verkest and I was born in the balmy heat of Sunrise, FL where I lived until I was twelve, moving then to Harrison, TN where I grew up and went to high school. At nineteen I enlisted in the Marine Corps for 5 years where I was privileged enough to serve as an MP and Radio Technician. Upon honorably discharging from the military, I decided to get a college education to become a more well-rounded person. I’m currently working on my undergraduate degree in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Natural Resources so I can be a further asset to this country and its people, as well as start a homestead for my community and family. Some of my hobbies include video games, running and hiking with my wife and dog, meditation, gardening, and studying esoteric symbology.

People should care about ecology because when you understand the environment around you, you better understand the part you play as another organism within the ecosystem you reside in. I’m studying ecology because I want to live in harmony with my environment and pass that harmony down to my children. I want people to read my blog and get a good overall understanding of the topic at hand, leaving no confusion about the data being explained. My blog will be different by being simple and concrete in explaining and portraying the information gathered during the labs, as well as being as well spoken as possible.
